World Photography Day: World Photography Day is observed worldwide on 19th of August every year with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. The day is not only celebrated by the staunch followers of photography, but all the people across the globe irrespective of their professions and interests come together and inspire the coming generations to understand the importance of photography.

On this particular day, millions of people capture different ideas and share their world with others, try to dwell in the imaginations of other photographers and moreover try bringing more happiness through the means of photography. An annual worldwide celebration, the day is dedicated to the art, craft, science, and history of photography.

In the modern world, World Photography Day aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose of sharing their world with the world.

Since the existence of cameras, photography was a medium of communication, restoring histories. In the early 19th century, photography also became a medium of personal expression, wherein a photograph captures a place, an experience, an idea or a moment in time. It is for this reason that it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words.

The Photography Day originated from the invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837. On January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the process and on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift free to the world.

  • In 1839, it was American photo enthusiast Robert Cornelius who clicked the world’s first selfie.
  • The first durable color photograph was taken by Thomas Sutton in 1861
  • The first digital photograph was taken in 1957
  • Almost 20 years before Kodak’s engineer invented the first digital camera. However, it was much later on August 19, 2010, when the World Photo Day hosted its first global online gallery.

People all around the globe have been celebrating World Photography Day ever since. In India, several colleges and institutions conduct photography contest on World Photography Day on August 19.
