PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline is December 31: Methods To link
Linking your PAN with Aadhaar is mandatory to file your income tax return. Another thing you to keep in mind is that if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by the December 31 deadline, then as per current laws your PAN will become inoperative.
Have you linked your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with your Aadhaar number? If you haven’t done it yet, you have time till December 31, 2019, to link the two. The finance ministry, in September, extended the earlier deadline (September 30) by three months to December 31.
Why do you need to link PAN with Aadhaar?
From April 1, 2019, it has become mandatory to quote and link Aadhaar number while filing an income tax return (ITR), unless specifically exempted. According to chartered accountants, an individual cannot file ITR without linking the two first.
Another thing you to keep in mind is that if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by the extended deadline, then as per current laws your PAN will become inoperative.
Also, if you are planning on quoting your Aadhaar in lieu of PAN, you have to make sure the two are linked. This is because if you have not linked the two and you quote your Aadhaar in lieu of PAN, then you will be issued another PAN. In July 2019 Budget, the government had allowed quoting of Aadhaar number in lieu of PAN wherever quoting of PAN is mandatory.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), then issued a notification on August 30, where it stated that if someone without a PAN card quotes their Aadhaar number to make a financial transaction, then the income tax department will consider this an auto-application for PAN and it will be issued to the individual.
How to link your PAN with Aadhaar?
If you are already a registered user of the income tax e-filing website
If you are already filing tax returns, then chances are that your PAN is already linked with Aadhaar if you have mentioned it previously while filing ITR. It is done by the income tax department in case details of both are already available with it.
You can check if your Aadhaar is already linked to your PAN by visiting the income tax e-filing website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
For non- registered users
If you don’t want to register yourself at the e-filing website, there is another way using which you can link your PAN and Aadhaar.
Just click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ on the e-filing website. A new form will appear where you are required to enter details – PAN, Aadhaar number, Name. If your Aadhaar card has the only year of birth, then you must also tick the option: ‘I have the only year of birth in Aadhaar card’.
Enter the captcha code and click on submit. Once submitted successfully, a message will be displayed on your screen showing your PAN is successfully linked to Aadhaar.
By sending an SMS to PAN service providers
If you are unable to link using the e-filing website of the department then there are other ways for linking PAN and Aadhaar.
You can link your by sending an SMS. You can send an SMS to either of the PAN service providers — NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited (UTIITL).
You will have to send an AMS in a specific format using a keyword to the either 567678 or 56161.
The format is: UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><SPACE><10 digit PAN>
For example, if your Aadhaar number is 111122223333 and PAN is AAAPA9999Q. Then you are required to send SMS to 567678 or 56161 as UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA9999Q
NSDL and UTI won’t charge you for this. However, SMS charges as levied by the mobile operator will be applicable.
